Carter’s history dates back to approximately 1880-1890 when Douglas Hart Davis Carter started a retail business located at #16 and #17 Broad Street.  About the turn of the century, the business located to where the RBC presently stands at the corner of High Street and Trafalgar Square and comprised of Douglas Hart Davis Carter and his two sons Harcourt Carter and Douglas Hart Carter.  Legend has it that Douglas Hart Davis went into partnership with someone and as a result  lost everything.  The business property was bought by Royal Bank of Canada in 1912.

Carter & Co. has owned the present #10 and #11 High Street Site since 1925 (approx) and at that time was under the management of Douglas Hart Carter.  His second son, Percy, gradually took over the management of the business in the 1950’s.  Mr. Douglas died in 1961.  Mr. Percy was joined by his brother George in the early fifties and they ran the business together until 1962 when George died.  Mr. Percy was joined by his eldest son Mr. Richard in 1969 who is currently the Chairman of the company.    Today (2011) the company not only consists of Mr. Richard, but also consist of several loyal, dedicated and committed families and individuals with the Carter’s family since the early days.

In 1974 the company opened its second branch located at Barbarees Hill to house administration and accounting facilities along with warehousing to provide a better kind of service to the customer in need of large materials for building with ample parking.

In 1975 a small branch was opened in the Wildey Shopping Plaza, catering specifically to the needs of the area.  By the 1980’s it was recognized that the business was outgrowing the space.
